recognition:

Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, Chennai has sanctioned an amount of Rs.1,35,000/- for Phase I of TNSCST Water Purification System for Government Schools (Virudhunagar District), a Programme of DST, Government of India. Dr.A.Sarathi, Assistant Professor of Chemistry has been selected as the Programme Coordinator. The Chief Educational Officer, Virudhunagar District Dr.Nagaraja Murugan has selected 10 Government Schools of Virudhunagar District. Water samples were taken from the Schools and sent to M/s.Chennai Mettex Lab Pvt. Ltd., Chennai (Accredited by NABL, DST and Government of India) for complete analysis. The sample reports were received and analysed and a consolidated project report was sent to TNSCST.

18. Community services:

Our college is considered as one of the best in the southern districts of Tamilnadu in offering peerless service to the society in general and the students in particular through several extension activities undertaken by NSS, NCC, YRC and RRC. The outlet is so heavy that these team members work extensively in helping the needy people and also make the student volunteers learn the practical works. They also learn the difficulties in their skills.

With the strenuous and extraordinary efforts of the YRC, NCC and NSS of our college, • several blood-donation camps have been organised at regular intervals in our campus.

Five such camps were conducted during the academic year 2009-2010 in collaboration with Dhanasamy Parimala Devi Medical Trust Blood Bank and as many as 515 units of blood were donated for the noble cause of life saving. This year our college received Champion’s Trophy from Indian Medical Association for donating maximum number of units in Virudhunagar District.

The Department of Physics organized a one-day “In-Service Training Programme for the Higher Secondary School Teachers of Our District”, sponsored by our college management on 29.10.2009 with a purpose to motivate them and update their knowledge in the latest trends of various teaching methods.

Our College conducted a “Science Talent Exam for the Plus 2 Students of Our District” on 26.12.2009. The Examination was conducted at various important centers of the district with the concurrence of the District Educational Department. The primary aim is to build confidence among the +2 students before appearing for their Government Public Examination. Around 2000 students from various schools of our district got benefited by this examination.

Department of Commerce organized TNSCST sponsored 4 days workshop on “Bringing ICT to Rural Women” on 23,24, 30 & 31 January, 2010. An awareness regarding ICT was also made on these days. Dr.A.A.Magesan acted as Co-ordinator for this programme. The SHG women of the Virudhunagar District are trained on ICT. The participants of the programme got hands on training on computer. An ISBN numbered book on ICT in Tamil is given to all the participants. The programme is arranged on the basis of the needs of SHG.

The NCC cadets took Anti Dowry pledge on 16th December, 2009. This shows that the students are against such inhuman practices. An awareness has been created in the young minds.

TNSCST sponsored training programme on Mushroom Cultivation was organized by Department of Microbiology for Self Help Group members on 18th February, 2010. The government has been funding such SHG related programs in order to motivate the public to depend on themselves.

Department of English organized a certificate course on “Communicative English” for the public at our college premises from 5th May 2010 to 28 May 2010. Students from various schools and colleges participated and developed their spoken skills.

1. Personality Development Cell This cell takes care of the students’ skills which are expected during the placements. Since many of the students come from the rural area, the institution feels the lapse of these skills in student community. As a result, apart from offering the communication skills through Language lab, special sessions are arranged to improve the personality of the students. The

various activities both subjective and practical oriented are listed below:

I A series of spoken English sessions (10) have been organized. Mr.R.Priyakumar, Assistant Professor in English handled the classes II Special sessions (Eight) have been arranged with the assistance of leading physiotherapist of our town Dr.A.T.C.Murugesan, Sports physiotherapist and fitness trainer, with the following objectives.

i. To give long and short-term physiotherapy training and session to differently abled persons with orthotic and prosthetic device and dose in need.

ii. Suggest them proper equipments such as crutches, sticks, orthopedic shoes & walking frames iii. To make best of their residual capacity and to lead normal lives.

III. In order to update the computer knowledge of the differently abled persons, a course on Introduction to computers, Microsoft Office and Internet has been organized. The programme was conducted by the Department of Computer Application. The programme consists of both theories as well as hands on training sessions. Totally twenty sessions were given to the students. Certificates were distributed to all the participants.

IV A motivating session on the topic “Bright Future” was arranged to our students on 26th March, 2010. Mr.K.Marimuthu, M.A., Revenue Inspector, District Collectorate, Virudhunagar was the expert. He motivated our students with several quotes, and shared his experiences. He also explained the various Government schemes available for differently abled persons.
