TECHNICAL PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Podium and Poster Presentations The 2016 WTC Technical Program includes more than 320 podium and poster presentations from more than 40 countries. The fulllength manuscripts for all presentations are contained on a USB Proceedings included with your registration materials. Delegates may order a hard copy of the Proceedings for an additional charge, to be shipped following the Congress. Information will be available at the UCA of SME bookstore and on the USB Proceedings.

Abstracts of all manuscripts are printed in full in the TECHNICAL PROGRAM POCKET PROGRAM. This program is also available in Spanish.

Please refer to Sessions-at-a-Glance for a quick review of sessions by day. Each day’s podium presentation session topics are accompanied by a poster session on the same day. Posters will be displayed in the exhibit hall during exhibit hours. Poster authors will be present from 13:00–14:00 each day to answer questions and discuss their paper/poster.

Ground Support for Deep Underground Construction:

Challenges of Managing Highly Stressed Ground in Civil and Mining Projects For the economic and safe construction of deep tunnels, a contractor has to be presented with efficient and effective support systems, i.e., support classes that can be rapidly installed and are effective in managing stress-fractured ground. For this purpose, it is necessary to properly anticipate the actual rock mass behaviour and to provide flexible but reliable means of ground control. In mining, mining-induced stresses further damage rock near excavations and excessive rehabilitation often causes undesirable delays and costs. In these situations, a deformation-based support design approach is needed to prevent overloading of the rock support system by excessive deformations and to sequence the support installation for optimal support performance.

These models are now much more than 3D animation, but intelligent constructs with embedded information that can be shared between stakeholders throughout an organisation, with the possibility to provide significant benefit in each phase of a tunnel project lifecycle.

The workshop will focus on current trends in the application of BIM technology to tunnelling, to allow teams to reduce direct costs, improve efficiency and reduce risk. Presentations being delivered by design, construction and project professionals and are not aligned with particular software.

The workshop will be Chaired by Dr Jurij Karlovsek.

Underground Support – Controlling the Ground Chair: G. Davidson, McMillen Jacobs Associates, UK ITA Co-chair: M. Knights, ITA Past President, UK 14:00-14:20 Tunnel Information Modelling in Most Recent Form – Applying BIM Technologies and Procedures in Tunnelling Environment M. Žibert, Elea iC Pty Ltd; S. Keniston, Skarpa Pty Ltd and J. Karlovšek, University of Queensland, Australia The importance of information management was recognized in surface construction industry decades ago, and has increasingly being recognized through formal process and laws. Around the world, these laws and codes of practice are currently being drafted and enacted, to reflect the development of software tools and corresponding increasing adoption by industry.

This paper deals with specifics of implementing information modeling in tunnelling business utilizing BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology developed for buildings as well as similar technology developed for mining industry. Although BIM is recognized initially as a 3D digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility the real benefits comes when complex capability through construction sequencing and even detailed programming (4D) and cost capabilities (5D) are included.

14:20-14:40 Centrifuge Modelling of Tunneling-induced Settlement Damage to 3D-printed Surface Structures S. Ritter, G. Giardina, M.J. DeJong and R.J. Mair, University of Cambridge For urban tunneling projects it is essential to predict and prevent building damage. Although various case studies and experiments have shown that buildings considerably modify greenfield soil movements, widely accepted damage assessment methods neglect this soil-structure interaction and simplify structures as linear elastic beams. This paper summarizes an experimental investigation of the response of more realistic structures to tunneling-induced deformations. Small scale structural models with façade openings and brittle material properties were 3D printed and tested in a geotechnical centrifuge. Soil and structure displacement data were obtained by image-based measurement.

Results demonstrate that structures notably mitigate differential greenfield ground displacements. It is also shown that maximum 22 – 28 APRIL | MOSCONE CENTER | WTC2016 soil settlements, horizontal soil displacements beneath the structure and structural damage in the form of cracking significantly depend on the position of the structure in the settlement profile.

The results provide a basis from which to predict building settlement response with greater certainty.

14:40-15:00 Design Diagrams for Estimating Tunnel Face Stand-Up Time in Water-Bearing Ground R. Schuerch, R. Poggiati and G. Anagnostou, ETH Zurich The paper presents dimensionless design diagrams for estimating the stand-up time of a tunnel face in saturated ground of medium-low permeability. The diagrams cover a wide range of ground parameters and apply to shallow tunnels (overburden less than two diameters). As the time-dependency of the face stability in water-bearing ground is associated with the consolidation process in the soil ahead of the tunnel face, the stand-up time is determined by means of hydraulic-mechanical coupled spatial stress analyses. The results presented are important for tunnel engineering practice, e.g. when estimating the feasibility of atmospheric interventions in the working chamber of a closed shield.
