Once it reaches the perivitelline space (a), the spermatozoon fuses with the oolemma by way a limited region of plasmalemma overlying the acrosome’s intact equatorial segment (delineated by arrow heads) (b). Fusion stimulates the exocytosis of cortical granules, and the beginning of decondensation in the postnuclear region begins as the egg cortex engulfs the anterior sperm head, bounded by the persistent inner membrane of the acrosome (c). When sperm incorporation is complete (d) the anterior head region is encased by internalized oolemma.
