Introduction This manual “Bicycle-friendly employer - made easy" helps SMEs to promote cycling in operation and to build an in-house cycling culture. The main target groups of this manual are company coordinators, CSR, environmental and mobility agents.

In order to show small companies how easy it is to implement several bicycle friendly measures, special tips for SME can be find at the implementation tips box.

The manual describes several measures that can help to increase the share of cycling in the company and to improve the framework for cycling employees.

The measures described are divided into five fields of action. In the best case, a mix of measures from the different fields of action will be implemented.

the costs of each action, each action will be evaluated with appropriate indicators:

EU-Projekt Bike2Work The manual was created as part of the EU project “Bike2Work". The EU project focuses on the expansion and strengthening of the successful campaign "Bike to Work" as well as an increase in the number of bicycle-friendly companies in Europe.

The project started in April 2014 and is carried out in Austria, Belgium, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia and Malta until March 2017.

Certification procedure for “Bicycle-friendly employers” In order to give European companies a special incentive to focus increasingly on bicycle friendliness in companies, the consortium of Bike2Work is working on an EU-wide certification for bicyclefriendly companies. The measures described in this manual are the basis for a certification process.

Description:

Bike2Work is an annual action in which companies can join to motivate employees to bike to work as often as possible. As a reward, all sorts of prizes will be raffled among all participants.

Description:

When employees are new to the company, they need to re-organise their mobility.

This is a good time to start cycling, but to encourage a switch of travel mode information can be very helpful.

 Information can be produced in an attractive design  Information can be complementary to and individual route map  A bicycle-related voucher can be added to the information package  As well as a small bicycle gift (eg saddle cover) for persons that restart cycling

Description:

Continuous information on the subject of cycling to all employees can strengthen the role of the bicycle in a company.

In this way, already active cyclists get important information to improve the quality of cycling, while future cyclists can be motivated to shift to cycling.

The information can be communicated via Internal newspaper, intranet, flyers, posters, e-mail, bulletin board, bicycle information point.

The following topics can be disseminated:

 Tips for buying a bike  Tips for bicycle accessories (lights, locks, bags, racks, tires © Bankhaus Krentschker / Haberkorn GmbH etc.)  Tips for cycling in the winter / on hot days  Safety tips on how to behave in traffic  Health check  Bike events within the company or in the community (Critical Mass, company outing, cyclist breakfast, cyclist of the month, bike to work)  Bicycle routing and tools (cycling maps, online tools, apps)  Changes in the cycling network  Contact addresses of regional cyclists associations  Information on complementary measures (e.g. parking management)  Workshops on bicyle maintenance and driving skills

Description:

In order to promote a cycling culture and thus sustain the motivation of employees to cycle, continuous recurring cycling activities and events can be offered. After some time, some of them become like rituals – reinforcing the spirit and togetherness.

Examples are:

© Raiffaisen Reisebüro | FGM-AMOR  Annual participation in the national / regional Bike2Work programme (www.bike2work.project.eu)  Cyclers Breakfast: offering a healthy breakfast on a specific day (e.g., once a month, once a quarter) for cyclists  Seasonal bicycle and lights check for winter / summer time adjustment (to offer by way of a local bike dealer)  Cyclist of the month (each month, an employee cycling to work is photographed, the picture is published and the cyclist is provided with a small gift (and maybe even gives a small interview)  Annual company outing by bicycle  Health Check (weight, body fat levels and blood pressure are measured, further testing may be carried out in collaboration with the company doctor)  Carry out a regular cyclist raffle (once every week/month on an unannounced day a random employee is chosen. In case this employee came by bike to work, he/she gets a little present).

 Regularly check whether recurring annual events can be linked to bicycle themes  Organise sponsors for gifts  Organising such events should be part of the job description of a bicylce coordinator

 Check whether there are bicycle apps for the region  Align the choice of route to the needs of the employee (e.g. more safe: mainly cycling routes;

as fast as possible: also on main roads, etc.)  Appoint a person responsible for routing advice  Routing advice can be part of the Welcome Package for new employees

A bicycle escort service accompanies employees to show them the fastest and safest bike paths between workplace and residence.

This measure is intended to motivate employees to commute to cover by bicycle.

 Check with you local bike dealers for corresponding bicycle service facilities  The service station should be installed close to the bicycle parking facilities  If the service station is outdoors, it should be lockable

In addition to a bicycle service station a room for maintenance and repairs can be provided.

If no such space is available, such repairs can be carried out through agreements with local local bicycle dealers.
