YEARS 7, 8 & 9 A full range of subjects is taught in each of the four fields. In addition, and running through all three years, a Religious Studies course is undertaken.
This Religious Studies course is designed to develop an understanding of the Word of God and how to apply Biblical principles to daily life. The course includes an overview of world, social, and moral issues as well as Biblical principles.
During these years the students will begin to be prepared for the core GCSE subjects leading to examinations in Year 11.
YEARS 10 & 11 (GCSE’s) Establishing a well-balanced curriculum for GCSE is the best solution for most students. To this end, the School provides as wide a variety of GCSE courses as possible. We are always seeking to improve and update the provision of such courses.
Our aim is to enable each pupil to choose a course of study best suited to his or her abilities and talents.
The normal arrangement is for each pupil to enter for all of the common core subjects (six GCSE’s) plus three additional subjects from a range of course options (selection subject to timetabling). This means that each pupil normally takes a total of 9 subjects at GCSE.

HOMEWORK Homework is a very important part of a child’s education and can add much to a child’s development. Children benefit greatly from the mutual support of parents and teachers in encouraging them to learn both at home and at school. One of the aims of our School is for children to develop as independent learners. We believe that homework is one of the main ways in which children can acquire the skill of independent learning.
We set a variety of homework activities in relation to the curriculum of the pupils’ individual subjects. They are given homework covering two to three subjects per night as set out on the school homework timetable. Time per subject increases from 20 minutes in Year 7 to 45 minutes in KS4.
All secondary pupils are given a homework diary to record their homework and it needs to be initialled by the parent when work is complete. Parents can also use the diary to write messages to teachers.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCEParticulars of the School’s academic performance for the last academic year are available on request from the School Office.
TRANSPORT Transport to and from school to fit in with the school day is the responsibility of parents.
However, certain churches and parents in the Watford, Luton and Dunstable areas have organised daily school transport using mini-buses. The Office can provide information on who to contact regarding availability.
The use of vehicles operated or managed by these churches is an appreciated facility and is not a right attached to attendance at school. The behaviour and attitude on the vehicles should be the same as that expected when on the school premises.

CURRICULUM ENRICHMENT‘DAWN KIDS’ This is a voluntary after school activity for 9-16 year olds. It was set up to provide the children with an opportunity to express and share their faith. Through dance, music, testimony and drama the youngsters, as a group, are able to demonstrate their love of God in churches, schools, prisons and in open air witness.
Since 1994, ‘Dawn Kids’ has been involved in a number of missions to other European countries. They have performed in concerts and participated in outreaches in the Czech and Slovak Republics, Finland, Estonia, Northern Ireland, Spain and Latvia. Whether at home or abroad, missions continue to be a central part of the ‘Dawn Kids’ ministry.
MUSIC In addition to general music periods in the School, the music department offers individual lessons on the piano, violin, drums, guitar, clarinet, saxophone, flute and recorder along with Speech & Drama individual and group classes.
The current scale of fees can be obtained from the School Office. Availability is on a first come, first served basis. In certain studies a waiting list is already in operation.
Throughout the School children have the opportunity to join the Primary or Secondary choir or orchestral groups which practice once a week during lunch times.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION & GAMESThe School encourages the physical training of each child alongside spiritual and intellectual development. Physical activities are provided for all children, along with weekly games in major sports.
We have regular inter-school matches in football and netball and occasional fixtures in rounders, table-tennis and basketball. There are frequent inter-house fixtures and the occasional after school sports clubs.
In the summer term the School participates in the Christian Schools’ sports day and we have our own inter-house athletics event.
SCHOOL EXCHANGESThe School currently has links with a secondary school in Bremen, Germany. The Secondary School has had fruitful short duration exchange visits with this School. Also the School usually has a French exchange every year.
PARENT LIAISONPARENTS There are Parent-Teacher consultation evenings during the school year. This is to enable regular monitoring and feedback on each pupil’s progress. In addition, progress reports are issued at regular intervals.
If specific questions or problems occur, appointments can be made with the Principal during the day or with Teachers at a mutually convenient time. Teachers will not normally be available for consultation during the school day, but can usually be contacted via the School Secretary.
The School is concerned for the whole child, not just academic training. Parents are encouraged to get to know their child’s teacher, so that they can work in partnership.
Parents are requested to start their children’s day with a good breakfast and to supply a nutritious lunch. Pupils are expected to arrive at school on time and be wearing full school uniform. Personal cleanliness and tidiness are important aids to good learning attitudes.
HOME/SCHOOL COMMUNICATIONRegular liaison between the School and the home is vital. To make sure that open communications continue at all times, letters, slips, etc, are sent home via the children and, where possible, through email.
HOMEWORK Set homework normally begins in Year 6. Homework should be given priority and done under the supervision of parents, who should check the general standard and neatness. In addition, children who have not completed their work during the school day may also be required to complete it at home. A Homework Diary is issued to record homework and parents are asked to sign this book at the end of each week.
BEHAVIOUR AND DISCIPLINE
AIMS AND EXPECTATIONS
It is a primary aim of our School that every member of the school community feels valued and respected, and that each person is treated fairly and well. We are a caring community, whose Christian values are based on mutual trust, consideration and respect for all. The School behaviour policy is, therefore, designed to support the way in which all members of the School can live and work together in a supportive way. It aims to promote an environment where everyone feels loved, happy, safe and secure.
The School has a number of school rules, but the primary aim of the behaviour policy is not a system to enforce rules. It is a means of promoting good relationships, by encouraging positive attitudes, so that people can work and learn together in an effective and considerate way.
The School expects every member of the school community to behave in a considerate way towards others, their property and school property.
We treat all children fairly and apply this behaviour policy in a consistent way.
This policy aims to help children to grow in a safe and secure environment, and to become positive, responsible and increasingly independent members of the school community.
The School rewards good behaviour, as it believes that this will develop an ethos of kindness and co-operation. This policy is designed to promote good behaviour, rather than merely deter anti-social behaviour.
THE ROLE OF THE PARENTSThe School works collaboratively with parents, so children receive consistent messages about how to behave at home and at school.
We expect parents to support their child’s learning, and to co-operate with the School, as set out in the home-school agreement. We try to build a supportive dialogue between the home and the School, and we inform parents immediately if we have concerns about their child’s welfare or behaviour.
If the School has to use reasonable sanctions to punish a child, parents should support the actions of the School. If parents have any concern about the way that their child has been treated, they should initially contact the class teacher or form tutor. If the concern remains, they should contact the Principal. If these discussions cannot resolve the problem, a formal grievance or appeal process can be implemented.
DRESS CODE AND APPEARANCEThe prescribed school uniform is to be worn by all pupils during the school day, including travelling to and from school (unless there are extenuating circumstances, for which prior permission has been given).
Shoes should be clean and a comb provided so that hair is kept tidy. No jewellery is to be worn, except one small, plain stud in each ear for those girls whose ears are pierced. Girls are not permitted to wear fashion cosmetics on face or nails whilst in school uniform. Hair is not to be unnaturally dyed.
A note will be sent home if the uniform or appearance is not of an acceptable standard (as naturally we want pupils to be the best possible witness and ambassadors for the School). The uniform is intended and expected to be ‘uniform’.
Most items with the School logo, both new and second-hand, are available directly from the School. Certain items must be purchased from Prestige Design & Workwear Ltd. The rest can be purchased from any retailer. All this is indicated in the uniform list (available separately from the School Office).
All items of uniform must be clearly marked (we suggest the use of name tapes).
We request that attention is given to the correct shade of colour for skirts, dresses and boys’ trousers. If in doubt, the School Office can help.
FIXED-TERM AND PERMANENT EXCLUSIONSOnly the Principal has the power to exclude a pupil from school. The Principal may exclude a pupil for one or more fixed periods, for up to 45 days in any one school year. The Principal may also exclude a pupil permanently. It is also possible for the Principal to convert a fixed-term exclusion into a permanent exclusion, if the circumstances warrant this.
If the Principal excludes a pupil, this will be done in consultation with the parents, giving reasons for the exclusion. At the same time, the Principal makes it clear to the parents that they can, if they wish, appeal against the decision to the Trustees, informing the parents how to make any such appeal.
If the Trustees decide that a pupil should be reinstated, the Principal must comply with this ruling.
