2. Review Chinese words of body parts and basic verbs, such as 手/眼/腰/腿/脚/头,转/提/ 踢/挥/举/扭/打/跳/跑/走/眨

3.Watch a video clip and ask the students to use Chinese to describe the movements.

4.Activity: Prediction Plan another video clip and ask the students to guess the meaning of the movement.

5.Acitivity: Prediction The teacher demonstrates more movements for the students to guess the meaning.

6.Learn the new vocabulary about Water Sleeve Gestures, including 水袖/扯/遮/掸拂/抖;and the students will learn to use different sequential order to say a series of movements.

7.The teacher will teach four basic Water Sleeve Gestures and explain the meaning.

8.Activity TPR: The whole class will follow the teacher’s instruction to perform the gestures.

9. Learn to xpress a series of verbs together by using sequential order ‘先。。。然后。。。再。。。接 着。。。最后。。。’

Assessment Assessment:

--Students will be pair up to perform on the platform.

--Student A will get a cue card from the teacher and read out the instruction to student B. Then Student B needs to perform the movement.

 

-Then Student B will choose another cue card to repeat the same procedure.

• Lead-in(3mins)

Open Questions:

1. How do Beijing Opera performers tell the story or convey the message? In what way?

2. What body parts do they need to use in order to conduct the non-verbal communication?

(hand, eye, waist, leg and foot) Today, we are going to learn to appreciate a few movements and their meanings in Beijing Opera. We will first review the Chinese names of body parts and some simple verbs, and then connect these movements with a fixed meaning in the opera. We will also have chances to practice, which will be very interesting and it helps consolidate your understanding.

• Certain movements are applied to express certain meanings in Beijing Opera (8 mins).

1) 看视频相片,让学生猜猜这个动作是什么意思。 Watch the picture and guess what the performer is doing.

• Water Sleeve Gestures 水袖功 (15mins) 1) 学生词 New Vocabulary 水袖 shuǐ xiù, water sleeve (像水一样,长,柔软,波浪形),double white-silk sleeves attached t the cuffs of a costume. It is the most skillful stunts in Beijing Opera and its function is to exaggerate actor’s mood.

(放图片) 动词: 扯 chě –pull 遮 zhē—cover, hide 掸拂 dàn fú--flick 抖 dǒu--shivering 2)教基本动作

--尊敬: 一只手横着扯起另外一只水袖,表示很有礼貌并且很恭敬。respect

--哀痛、害羞:用一只手扯起另一只水袖遮着脸。sadness/shyness

-- 拂尘: 用水袖轻轻的在衣服上掸拂。 wiping and whisking the dirt from the shirt

--害怕:抖袖 fear

4) Assessment:
